Romance Scams What You Need to Know (12 June 2025)

At Red Flagg™, we know scams are everywhere — some are clever, others are deeply cruel. Romance scams are among the most heartbreaking. They target good people — kind, trusting individuals — and lead them into false relationships with someone they have never met.

These scams are not about gullibility. They are designed to feel real, and they work by building trust over time. That is why they are so dangerous.

If you are ever unsure about someone you are speaking with online, or if a relationship just does not feel right, talk to us. Red Flagg™ is here to help protect your digital life and your peace of mind.

Romance Scams & How They Work

Most romance scams begin with a friendly message online. It might come through Facebook, a dating app, WhatsApp or even as a text from someone who claims to have the wrong number. They might say they are working overseas, in the military, or living a busy professional life. They are warm, attentive, and message often.

The relationship builds quickly. They may talk about the future, share private details and offer emotional support. It feels personal — because that is how the scam is built. These scammers are highly trained and experienced. Many victims are warned by family or friends, but still believe the relationship is real.

Then comes the request for money. It might be for a hospital bill, a visa, a broken phone, or a plane ticket to come and visit. But there is no visit. There is no relationship. It was all a lie — and the money is gone.

How to protect yourself

Romance scams are designed to feel real. That is what makes them so dangerous. They target your heart and your trust not just your wallet. If you are not sure, talk to someone. You are never alone.

• Be careful with any romantic messages or relationships that begin online
• If it feels too good to be true, it is worth checking — real love takes time
• Speak with a trusted friend or family member and ask what they think
• Never send money, gift cards or cryptocurrency to anyone you have not met in person
• Never share private photos or banking details, no matter how much you trust them
• If something feels off, contact Red Flagg™ — we will look into it and give you honest advice

We understand how convincing these scams can be. You will not be judged. We will help you stay safe.

Important Warning for Australians

Last year, Australians lost over 23 million dollars to romance scams. Many victims were over 65. It can happen to anyone. Police recently closed down a scam operation overseas that was targeting thousands of Australians every day.
